Coeliac disease is not just a gut disease! Yes, gluten does cause gut damage, and yes there are bowel symptoms. However, coeliac disease is much more than a gastrointestinal disease.
This is a list of the well-documented conditions that are part of coeliac disease. Most of these symptoms are caused by gluten or the damage that gluten causes on the nerves and brain.
Brains and nerves Peripheral neuropathy and myopathy Epilepsy, convulsions Ataxia Myelopathy Psychiatric disturbances Depression and mood disorders Mouth and gut Recurrent aphthous mouth ulcers Defects in tooth enamel Pharyngeal and oesophageal carcinoma Reflux oesophagitis Lymphocytic gastritis Liver disease Irritable bowel syndrome Ulcerative jejunitis Adenocarcinoma of small bowel Hormones Type 1 diabetes Infertility in men and women Recurrent abortion Thyroid disorders Adrenal disorders (Addison’s disease) Blood and immune Anaemia (iron, folate and vitamin B12 deficiency) Coagulation disorders from vitamin K deficiency IgA deficiency Hyposplenism T-cell lymphoma Cardiomyopathy Bones and joints Osteopenia Arthralgia/arthritis Osteoporosis Growing pains Skin and hair Dermatitis herpetiformis Eczema Psoriasis Brown pigmentation of face and cheek mucosa Alopecia areata (hair loss) To read much more about this read my book “Full Of It! – the shocking truth about gluten”. This book documents the brain-grain connection. This book explains how gluten can damage your brain. |
