We all have a weight problem.  One in two (50%) people have an overweight problem.  The other half has to work hard to make sure that they stay trim.  We all have a predilection for gaining too much weight

Gluten can make you put on weight.  Lots of people who go gluten free lose weight.  So if you are struggling with your weight, then check out if you are gluten-sensitive – you might have The Gluten Syndrome.

As you know, there are a lot of disadvantages in being too big – health, energy and social issues.  So what can you do about it?  How can you tell if gluten is behind your size?

Even people with celiac disease can be over weight.  A recent medical paper showed that up to 10% of children presenting with celiac disease are obese.  This is crucial to understand.  Being overweight does NOT exclude celiac disease.

The only way to see if gluten is the culprit is to test for it.  And before you can test, you need to think about the possibilities of gluten being the problem.

Why do you put on weight with gluten?

  • Gluten can make you hungry – gluten foods are often sugary and this is addictive.  You tend to eat too much, too often.
  • Gluten can be converted into a morphine-like substance that makes you want to eat even more – then you put on even more weight.
  • Gluten can give you a sore tummy, and to ease the discomfort, you are tempted to eat more.
  • Gluten can make you experience gastric reflux.  This gives you heart burn and chest pain.  Again, eating, and especially milky drinks, will help ease this – but the consequence in putting on even more weight.

What should you do?

Go through the 3-step diagnosis process.

Find out if you are reacting to gluten.

Try a gluten-free diet and see if this helps control your weight.

When will you get better?

Once you have got your diagnosis, if you have the gluten syndrome, you should feel better within a few weeks of going gluten free.
