Too late to test? Is my Child Coeliac? |

”Is there anyway to find out if a child is coeliac after they have been on a low gluten free diet for most of their life. His symptoms, prior to going low gluten, were: lethargy, bowel problems, pale complexion, dark circles around his eyes, poor growth (dropped from 90th percentile to 10th percentile on his growth chart), bloated tummy, constantly unsettled. He was put on minimal gluten at 12 months old and is now almost 5. Since going to minimal gluten he has improved dramatically.” Penny
This is a very common question. As he is still taking some (minimal) gluten, he should be tested. Get the blood tests that I recommend on the Blood Page of this website. Then let me know. Also he should have the “HLA gene test” to give an idea if he has the genetic predisposition. He will definitely have the gluten syndrome. But he might be a full celiac. If the blood tests show a high tTG or positive EMA, then he should have an endoscopy. Always get blood tests BEFORE going gluten-free. It will be a big help in the future. |
