"My mother died of Alzheimer's last year (older kind), her father died of Alzheimer's in his early fifties (early onset). My mother did have digestive problems. Do you think Celiac is related?” Thanks, Patricia.
My Reply: This is a huge question. This question: “Is celiac disease associated with Alzheimer's disease?” was examined by Frisoni and colleagues in 1997 (Acta Neurol Scand. 1997). In a small study of only 24 people, they found that about 10% of both controls and Alzheimer’s had high gliadin antibodies. This was too small a study. This year, a connection has been made between biochemical activity (the tissue TGase enzyme - tTGase, type 2) and common human diseases: celiac disease and some neuropsychiatric disorders, including Alzheimer’s (Martin A. Curr Med Chem. 2006). A similar message is given by G.Amantea (Front Biosci. 2006). In my opinion, the answer is that a link is being found between gluten and Alzheimer’s. Gluten seems to have a big effect on the nervous system in some people. Cheers, Dr Rodney Ford. Recommendation: You can find more in-depth information in the book - "Full Of It! The shocking truth about gluten” |
