"I have coeliac disease. Should all my family be tested?"
I Reply: Yes! If you have coeliac disease, then there is a one in ten chance that others in your immediate family are also affected.
In addition, some family members may be reacting to gluten (symptoms of being sick, tired and grumpy) but without having the gut damage part of the problem. These people will have The Gluten Syndrome, rather than coeliac disease.
The tests that you can do are: 1 – look for tissue damage by blood tests (tTG. EMA, and Deamidated Gliadin Peptide tests). 2 – look for evidence of gluten reactivity of your immune system (IgG-gliadin, IgA-gliadin, or the www.enterolab.com stool tests) 3 – look for evidence of the coeliac gene (HLA DQ2/DQ8).
Check out our “Blood test” pages for more details. Cheers, Dr Rodney Ford
