Eosinophilic esophagitis (EE) and celiacs PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dr Rodney Ford

“Do you know if there is any connection between celiacs and eosinophilic esophagitis (EE)?  I have 2 celiac children, and 1 more (7yrs) who has EE.  He has had a biopsy, checking for celiacs, because he is very small and thin.  The biopsy did not show celiacs, but did show EE.

He is not responding to the steroid treatment (he has been on it for 4 months and has gained no weight).  He tested negative for all common allergies.  I do not like having him on steroids over a long period.”  Thank you so much, Tammy.

Great question.  Yes! is the answer.

I see lots of EE children (often from celiac families).
They all have high gluten antibodies. They are gluten intolerant or gluten-sensitive.  They have the gluten syndrome.
Nearly all get better just on a gluten-free diet.  I almost never have to use steroids  (I am currently writing this up as a medical paper). I hope that this helps. Cheers, Dr Rodney Ford
