Susan asks: “My daughter has Celiac. My bowel biopsy and all my blood test showed negative. But a stool test with Dr. Fine showed positive. My medical doctors say that Dr. Fine's test is nonsense. Is this stool test accurate? Thanks, Susan.”
I Reply: Great question, Susan. Dr. Ken Fine's stool tests look for IgA-gliadin (www.enterolab.com). They are useful and accurate tests. A positive test indicates that the immune system is reacting to gluten. I have not had personal experience using theses tests (I am in NZ). However, I am convinced by Dr Fine's data that they are a sensitive and valuable test. The Gluten Syndrome occurs in at least 1 in 10 people – they react to gluten and get unwell. However, only 1 in 100 have celiac disease (that is they have gut damage in addition to the symptoms from gluten). If you have troublesome symptoms, then I recommend that you try a gluten free diet and see how you feel (easy in your household with a celiac daughter) I hope that this helps. Cheers, Rodney Ford. |
