Heidi asks: “Can I make myself gluten-sensitive? I have been told that if you go off gluten for six weeks or so, you can make yourself sensitive to it, or to wheat, even if you're not now. Is this true?”
My reply is - it depends! If you have no sensitivity to gluten, then if you go on and off gluten, this will have no effect. You will not develop a sensitivity to gluten. But, if you are already a slightly sensitive to gluten (a few symptoms and a high gluten antibody level to gluten), then you might find that you become more sensitive to gluten when you go back on it. This is because many people who have low grade reactions to gluten are in balance/tolerance with their gluten reactions. They are used to the symptoms and their reactions are clinically minor. However, when these people take gluten out of their diet, they feel better and their tolerance to gluten disappears. And, when they take gluten again they get a bad reaction. They are now unable to tolerate gluten at all. I hope that this helps. Cheers Rodney Ford. |
