"How long do I have to be gluten-free?" If you have coeliac disease, then you need to commit to a strict gluten-free diet, lifelong. That is forever. The long term follow up information shows that you need to remain gluten-free to stay in great health. That is even if gluten does not seem to cause you many symptoms.
This is the reason to make an accurate diagnosis from the beginning. This is why I am making such a fuss about gluten!
If you have gluten-sensitivity, without gut damage, and without evidence of the coeliac gene, is a slightly different story. However, no one knows the answer. It is my experience to date that those who are affected do not develop tolerance. Also, there is a lot of evidence that gluten can cause severe nerve and brain damage. Therefore, I think that it would be prudent to stay strictly gluten-free for a very long time (forever!). |
