"Oh dear! The gluten-free diet is costing me a fortune! Can you help me?"
I reply: Although the cost of the gluten-free diet initially seems very expensive, it can be reduced in several ways. - Avoiding the speciality Gluten-Free products.
- Eat more fruits and vegetables. Make a salsa to have with vegetable dips.
- Cut down on the bread substitutes.
- Rice and potato are cheap, also so is cornflour.
- Make up your own flour mixes (see our book “Going gluten-free - How to get started”).
- Make your own meat patties, chicken kebabs are good. All unprocessed meat is gluten-free.
- Milk is gluten-free. Some yoghurts are gluten-free, please check the labels.
- Avoid pre-packaged foods.
- Cut down on all sweets, cakes and biscuits.
This will keep your costs down. Cheers, Dr Rodney Ford.
