"I am about to go on a gluten-free diet - how quickly will I get better on a gluten-free diet? I am 37 years old and have just been diagnosed with celiac disease"
I reply: The younger you are, the quicker you will get better. Children usually feel a lot better within a few days to a few weeks. However, adults take a few weeks to a few months before they lose most of their symptoms. Some people are tempted to reduce their gluten intake rather than going totally gluten-free. Unfortunately, most people need to be strictly gluten-free for at least three months to get the full benefits. Remember to make sure that you get your blood tests BEFORE going on a gluten-free diet. As you have celiac disease, you need to be gluten free for your whole life. You may need some extra help and support to do this. Cheers, Dr Rodney Ford
