It is my policy to test all first degree family members (parents, siblings, children). One of my newly diagnosed gluten-sensitive families wanted more of their family tested. So they went down to their local medical centre. They asked for the gluten blood tests on the other children. The nurse said “You are looking for trouble!"
These parents were flabbergasted. They wanted to solve their health problems. But the nurse wanted to ignore the problem. This is a common sentiment. The family insisted on going through with the blood tests. There seems to be a road block at every corner. My advice is to get the tests. You cannot tell if you do not test. When to introduce children to gluten? There is still a lot of research going into this question. I have come to the conclusion that for ALL children, avoid gluten until they are at least 12 months if possible. For coeliac families, avoid gluten for at least 2 years (and maybe through to 5 years – this is not difficult as there is already a gluten-free environment in the house. Better to avoid or delay a gluten problem – keep your children healthy and happy.
