Introduction to Gluten PDF Print E-mail

Could gluten be making you sick?  or unwell? or tired?

I have been working in the “food allergy and food intolerance” medical field for over 25 years.  I have recently defined “The Gluten Syndrome”.  My research shows that gluten affects at least 10% of the general population and about 30% of people who are unwell.

To find your way around this “new to gluten” section, you just click on the topics that interest you (in any order).  You will soon get to grips with the gluten issues.

Most people want to know a lot more.  So I encourage you to become a “member” (it is free) so that you can explore this huge website in more depth.

Should you trust Dr Rodney Ford’s knowledge? PDF Print E-mail

You want reliable advice from the web.  So can you trust my information?  How do you know?  The best thing is find out more about me – then you will trust what I have to say.

Many people (including a lot of my medial colleagues) do not believe what I say about gluten.  These disbelievers state that gluten is a safe protein and is completely harmless (except for the 1% who have coeliac disease).  But they have NO evidence to back up such claims.

Who is Dr Ford? PDF Print E-mail

I am a paediatrician (a doctor who looks after children) and I have ongoing gastroenterology (gut) and food allergy training.  I run the Children’s Gastroenterology and Allergy Clinic in Christchurch, NZ.  I see thousands of sick children every year with food allergy and food intolerances.  I help most of them get better.

I attend and present papers at international medical conferences in gastroenterology and allergy every year.  I conduct ongoing research in gluten reactions and write books on the subject.

Who are the critics? PDF Print E-mail

Most of my critics are not trained in gastroenterology and allergy, they do not attend international conferences and they do not have experience in allergy testing and nutritional issues.  Yet they blindly refute what I have to say (under the guise of “placebo effect” or “randomized controlled trials”).

The convinced PDF Print E-mail
I predict, that once you have delved into the gluten information, you will be convinced that gluten causes many people (and maybe you) grievous bodily harm.

Those who are convinced about The Gluten Syndrome are: those who are cured of a lifetime of ills by a simple gluten free diet; those who see their children suddenly get well and achieve after years of sickness; those medics who at least have found a way to heal their chronically ill patients; those families who can now enjoy their children rather than suffers their distress; those whose lives have been changed by the power of a gluten-free diet.

Be kind to your GP PDF Print E-mail
Please remember that your GP is only following the guidelines that he/she has been taught.  A hundred years of tradition has to be broken to accept that gluten can cause more than just coeliac disease.  Changes in the medical field justifiably comes slowly.  A high level of evidence is required to change the medical guidelines.  So there will always be a tension between new syndromes and old treatments.

The good news is that in my experience, more and more GPs and paediatricians are accepting the Gluten Syndrome concept.

What is gluten PDF Print E-mail
Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat grains. This protein has a number of components, one of which is called gliadin.  It so happens that the people who get sick from gluten are usually reacting to the gliadin component.

The gluten substance is found in wheat, rye and barley grains, and in any food that has these grains as an ingredient.

What does gluten do? PDF Print E-mail
The toxic part of the gluten molecule is a protein called "gliadin".

Your immune system defends your body strongly against gliadin. It  uses weapons called "antibodies" which repel the gliadin, in an attempt to remove it from your body.  The outcome of your immune system’s fight against gliadin is that you start up the production of antibodies that are specifically targeted towards this gliadin: these are called anti-gliadin antibodies.

What is Gluten-sensitivity? PDF Print E-mail

Gluten sensitivity occurs when your body reacts to the gluten (gliadin) in your food.  It causes most of its damage by interfering with the nerves that regulate your body.

Gluten reactions make people feel sick, tired and grumpy.

It includes coeliac (celiac) disease.

All of these problems are brought together by the concept of The Gluten Syndrome.

This book explains it in more detail

What are the symptoms? PDF Print E-mail

First, recognise your symptoms.  By the way, many people who are affected by gluten do not realise that they actually have symptoms.  They have been sick for so long that they just accept the way that they are.

We always have an excuse for feeling sick, tired or grumpy: we are too tired because we are working so hard; we feel exhausted because of the children wearing us out, we feel a bit down because of our social problems – etc, etc.  These can all be symptoms from gluten.  We dismiss symptoms as general wear and tear of life.

Why you need the blood tests PDF Print E-mail

Blood tests are VERY important in the diagnosis of gluten-sensitivity and coeliac (celiac) disease.

Do not to go off gluten until you have had your blood tests.

  1. To diagnose coeliac disease (that is when you get gut tissue damage), the first step is to look for evidence of gut damage by blood tests.  These "tissue damage" tests are called: tissue transglutaminase (tTG) or endomesial antibodies (EMA).  If these are positive, then you should have an endoscopy (also called a small bowel biopsy) to confirm the diagnosis.  If you do have coeliac disease, then you are committed to a lifelong gluten-free diet.  So it is very important to make a firm diagnosis.

  2. To diagnose gluten-sensitivity (reactions to gluten without the gut damage).  The blood tests that you need are the IgG-gliadin and the IgA-gliadin tests.  A positive test shows that you are experiencing an immune reaction to gluten.  Most gluten-sensitive people have a high IgG-gliadin test.

We prefer the test kits from Inova Diagnostics
