Blood tests are VERY important in the diagnosis of gluten-sensitivity and coeliac (celiac) disease. Do not to go off gluten until you have had your blood tests. Become a member to receive blood test information
- To diagnose coeliac disease (that is when you get gut tissue damage), the first step is to look for evidence of gut damage by blood tests. These "tissue damage" tests are called: tissue transglutaminase (tTG) or endomesial antibodies (EMA). If these are positive, then you should have an endoscopy (also called a small bowel biopsy) to confirm the diagnosis. If you do have coeliac disease, then you are committed to a lifelong gluten-free diet. So it is very important to make a firm diagnosis.
- To diagnose gluten-sensitivity (reactions to gluten without the gut damage). The blood tests that you need are the IgG-gliadin and the IgA-gliadin tests. A positive test shows that you are experiencing an immune reaction to gluten. Most gluten-sensitive people have a high IgG-gliadin test.

A number of other blood tests are also helpful – see our blood test list for a full explanation about our recommendations for your blood tests (some people also advocate stool gluten antigen testing).
Important Note: many Laboratories no longer offer the IgG-gliadin test So check out your medical lab. Phone and ask. In New Zealand, the laboratories that do the full gluten testing are:
- MedLab South
- Southern Community Laboratories. But you have to specifically ask for these tests.
For diagnosis, it is very important that you get a Blood Test
You can follow our 3-step process to find out if you are gluten-sensitive or have coeliac (celiac) disease.
