Emma is 3 year's old and has coeliac disease. She is a big girl on the 90th centile for height and weight. This means that for her physical appearance she looks more like she is 5 or 6 year's of age. She has never had diarrhoea or constipation. Her symptoms of coeliac disease were a protuberant tummy and a prolonged bout of vomiting. However, there is a strong family history of coeliac disease in her family. She had abnormal blood tests for coeliac disease and an abnormal endoscopy. She does carry the coeliac HLA marker DQ2/DQ8. It is interesting that she has confirmed coeliac disease without any growth or bowel disturbance. This is a common situation. It is my experience that many medical practitioners are unaware that coeliac disease can present with only very minor symptoms. Symptoms from gluten can be subtle. Coeliac disease can occur without bowel symptoms. Many more people who are unwell should demand the coeliac and gluten tests from their doctors.
